• What’s with the Oil Cleansing Method?

By now, you may have heard or read something about the “Oil Cleansing Method” or “cleansing oils,”… yes? And perhaps those of you with oily or combination skin may have wondered, “Whaaa? Oils to cleanse? Are they crazy?”

While it may sound utterly preposterous to allow anything greasy to make contact with your already slick skin, here’s the straight skin scoop—directly from our ingredient guru and Director of Product Research, Doria Christie.

ME: Doria, what the heck is the Oil Cleansing Method—and why are cleansing oils such a craze? Is that really a good idea?

DORIA: Yes, natural oils are fantastic for cleansing skin… which makes sense because “oil dissolves oil” so skin’s excess oil and sebum are dissolved and lifted by introducing oil to the skin. Also, oil is a natural alternative to removing makeup and sunscreen, without harmful sulfates that act as degreasers. Using oil to cleanse is particularly beneficial for those with dry skin, as the oil leaves skin moisturized, along with oils containing fatty acids that heal compromised skin.

ME: Makes sense, but what about oily or combination skin?

DORIA: It’s a myth that those with oily tendencies should keep stripping that oil away. In fact, that practice causes more harm than good because it sends a message to your body to overproduce the very oil we’re trying to keep at bay. Oil doesn’t cause blemishes. Hormones, bacteria and a buildup of dead skin cells are the nasty culprits.

ME: Why not simply use baby oil?

DORIA: No, no, no! Baby oil contains mineral oil which blocks the skin’s ability to breathe. It can clog pores, causing more harm than good. The Oil Cleansing Method is about using the “good oils” to remove the “bad oils,” and bacteria and dirt.

ME: OK, so what are the “good” cleansing oils we should look for?

DORIA: Choose oils that cut grease—without adding to skin conditions like acne, blackheads or redness flare-ups. For the best cleansing oils, look for products containing a mixture of botanicals like lightweight safflower oil and sunflower oil. Safflower Oil is high in linoleic acid and contains calming properties for acne-prone skin. Sunflower Oil is rich in vitamins A, E, C and D with antioxidants and sun damage/age-fighting properties.

Also, there are those that have sensitivities to even tap water, so using the oil cleansing method can help alleviate these irritations caused by conventional cleansing methods.

Ok….so, this is where I gotta give Rutz a plug! 😉 This is why I love JUST BREATHE Awakening Facial Wash since it is a combination of oils (fatty acids) and natural ingredients with antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory qualities, along with being a PH balanced formulation (super important to protect/maintain the acid mantel – skin’s natural barrier). I, personally, do not use water with JUST BREATHE. I use it in a similar fashion as you would with the Oil Cleansing Method, right from the bottle directly onto dry skin. As I gently massage into my face, it thickens and breaks down dirt and oils, lifting them away from my skin.

I only remove JUST BREATHE with minimal water on a slightly warm wash cloth, as to not disturb any tiny capillaries. Ok, so if you want to take this even a step further—the way most estheticians do it in their treatment rooms—do a pre-cleanse with JUST BREATHE followed by applying a facial oil to further cleanse and moisturize. I do this on days that I have worn more makeup and/or used a heaver (physical) sunscreen, etc. Hint:A tiny touch of Rutz BODY NECTAR (containing both Safflower and Sunflower Oils) will do the trick for removing stubborn makeup under the eyes!

ME: Yeah, I know and love that trick! Thanks for the skin “skinny,” Doria!

DORIA: And, of course, one of the best things about all Rutz products is that they have that “bonus” ingredient. They are all lovingly infused with Reiki energy by our Rutz Reiki Masters!

  • Chemical Safety Chemical Safety: What’s in YOUR cleaning cabinet?

New chemical safety law will impact nearly every household product you use!

Chemical safety isn’t something you’ll ever have to worry about with any Rutz product. Every Rutz Skincare and Home Collection product we offer is not only made from natural and organic ingredients, but they are 100% toxin-free (and yes, paraben-free.)

But did you know that ingredients used in your everyday products—like soap, paper, water bottles, cleaning supplies have never been assessed for chemical safety?

We assume that these common household products have been deemed safe. Not so. Unlike food and pharmaceuticals, these products aren’t subject to federal guidelines or regulations. Every single day, we are exposed to hundreds of chemicals found in common household products! Thankfully, that’s about to change.

    The good news…

On June 22, 2016, President Obama signed into law the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This bill amends the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the Nation’s primary chemicals management law.

As reported in the Washington Post, “President Obama signed a bill into law that places stronger regulations on chemicals present in nearly every product Americans use, including detergents, clothing, paint thinners, cleansers and automobiles.

The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act passed by Congress early this month in a rare bipartisan vote. It updates the Toxic Substances Control Act, which had not been reauthorized since the Ford administration in the mid-1970s. The new law gives the Environmental Protection Agency more oversight and stronger tools to monitor chemicals that in some cases could cause cancer and other health problems in adults and children…

Remarking on the bill’s passage, Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) explained why the old law fell short. ‘Most Americans believe that when they buy a product at the hardware store or the grocery store, that product has been tested and determined to be safe,’ he said. ‘But that isn’t the case. Americans are exposed to hundreds of chemicals from household items.’

The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates praised the bill’s passage as historic and said it “begins the process of regaining the public’s confidence in everyday products made possible by our industry.”

As you can imagine, implementing this law will undoubtedly take months, or perhaps years. In the meantime, check out one of our best-sellers, Herbaceous Scentz Multi-Tasking Surface Cleaner. With just four 100% natural ingredients, this cleaner stands up to the toughest grease and grime, while filling the air with breathable aromatherapy scents. (Pssst, you can ditch those “air fresheners”—you know, the ones whose ingredients are conveniently “anonymous.”

Available in five “aHOMEatherapy” scents, Rutz Herbaceous Scentz surface cleaners are tough on grime—yet leave your counters, floors (and more) kissably safe! So effective and aromatic, you might find yourself cleaning toilets and counters—just for fun!

  • Dry Brushing Detox your 3rd kidney with dry brushing

    11 benefits for 11 bucks

Dry brushing is one of the latest “what’s-old-is-new-again” trends.  Did you even know you have a 3rd kidney? Well, that’s the term many scientists and doctors use when referring to our skin. Why? Because it’s one of the largest detox organs of our body. When we sweat, we release toxins. When our kidneys are in overload, our skin acts as a back-up system to keep our blood clean so diseases can’t creep in. When our blood is healthy, our skin is nourished and glows.

One of the easiest ways you can help detox your body and blood—while reaping a whole bunch of skin benefits—is by dry brushing.

‘What’s that?’ you say. I’ll tell you in a sec.

But first let me introduce myself! I’m Deb Warren, one of the many behind-the-scenes gal pals of Steph Schuler, our fearless leader and founder of Rutz. As a friend and former writer and blogger for The Skin Center of Pittsburgh, Steph asked me to help contribute to the Rutz Blog.

As a blood cancer survivor and a fan of all things natural (like Rutz products) I thought I should start with this piece on dry brushing—because it’s healthy for you in sooo many ways. In fact, it very well could be one of the things that helped me experience something of a miracle with my personal brand of cancer, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). More on that later.

    So why dry brush?

Dry brushing (or dry skin brushing) is a homeopathic detox method that stimulates and exfoliates the skin while helping the lymphatic system purge accumulated toxins that can cause illness, not to mention dull skin.

This practice has gained a lot of media attention lately, but it’s actually nothing new. Dry brushing has its roots in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, the oldest healing science known to human kind. Ayurveda originated in India over 5,000 years ago. In this system of medicine, dry skin brushing is called is also known as “garshana”—no, not a new yoga pose—but a secret method of dry massage.

I discovered the many “win-wins” of dry brushing when my CLL took a turn for the worse. I developed some bulky lymph nodes in my neck that I would conceal with my hair or scarves…yep, that bad. Turns out that I had developed the worst type of genetic mutation one can get with CLL: the deadly 17 p deletion. When my doctor told me I’d likely be facing a life-saving treatment soon, I decided to take matters in my own hands in the meantime. I researched health practices that I hoped would help my body heal itself (as I believe it naturally wants to do) and turn this deadly mutation around. One of my new practices was dry brushing.

    Here’s what it does internally:

    •       Energizes the body
    •       Boosts blood circulation
    •       Stimulates the lymphatic system
    •       Like kidneys, it helps the body rid itself of accumulated toxins
    •       Improves digestion
    •       Helps relieve overworked muscles

    External, skin benefits:

    •       Exfoliates to sweep away dead skin cells
    •       Opens and deeply cleans congested pores
    •       Invigorates the skin
    •       Boosts collagen production
    •       Improves appearance of cellulite

Dry brushing is easy – and only takes 2-3 minutes

For about $10-12, you can buy a dry brush at health food stores, some pharmacies, or online. What to look for is either a long or short-handled brush (usually wooden) with natural bristles, preferably from vegetable fibers. I love my Yerba Prima Skin Brush. Some brushes have a long, removable handle.

Toward-the-heart is the simplest method of dry brushing since it’s easy to remember.

    1.     Before showering (preferably in the morning) start at the feet with short strokes and move around the ankle and leg as you move up, always stroking upwards toward the heart. Don’t forget those cheeks if you’re prone to cellulite!
    2.     Move to the torso, up to the breasts, again, stroking toward the heart or in counter-clockwise circles. Avoid sensitive breast areas.
    3.     Next stroke your neck, front of shoulders and décolleté down toward the heart.
    4.     Go to the hands and arms, repeating the upward strokes toward the heart.
    5.     Don’t forget your back.
    6.     Be sure to rinse those dead skin cells from your brush.
    7.     The best part? After showering, your skin will look and feel so fresh. And it will be more receptive to soaking up your post-shower body moisturizers like Rutz Body Nectar or Smooth Talker.

As your skin becomes accustomed to dry brushing, you can add more pressure, but never so much that your skin becomes raw or irritated. You should notice that your skin is slightly flushed after brushing—as your lymph starts flushing out those nasty toxins. When you shower, you’ll feel more invigorated, which is why dry brushing is best done in the morning!

There are more technical methods of dry brushing that work with the body’s “watersheds.” But they are far more complicated. I recommend starting with the toward-the-heart method first.

Back to my CLL story. After using this dry brushing method (among other things) for about 6 months, I’m happy to report that medical tests now show that my 17p mutation (you know, that deadly one that shouldn’t go away on its own?) has disappeared! Even the CLL experts are baffled!

So help your body. And revive your skin—with dry brushing! *

    Happy brushing!!!

To you and your health, with love!

*Note: Dry brushing and other homeopathic methods should be used in conjunction with (not as a substitute for) Western medicine.

  • Riley Oh, Those Dog Days of Summer!

A dog can’t think that much about what she’s doing, she just does what feels right. ~ Barbara Kingsolver

You ready for the heat to back off a bit? As you can see, Riley, our Director of Snacks & Naps, is too! While the phrase “dog days of summer” implies that it’s time to lie around and slurp popsicles, we really don’t have that luxury, right? We’re too occupied “working like a dog,” gulping Starbucks Lattes (Venti, please!) and getting organized for all things FALL. New clothes for the kids. New activities and schedules to juggle. Pinning what we’re pining for. And so on…

Ever wish you could just stop time (and the ding on your devices) for just a few days, so you can catch your breath and tackle those “to-do” items that never manage to get checked off? Yeah, this hot, steamy summer has been like that—for us, too. In fact, we’ve got so many things shakin’ at Rutz (all good things) that we’ve kind skipped over the “blog days of summer.” Yup, we’ve been AWAL here in blog land since the launch of our new site, RutzNaturals.com, in July. But that’s about to change.

    Here’s what’s coming up:

    • We’ve got a new blog writer, Deb Warren. Deb is not new to Rutz, she’s been one of my behind-the-scenes gal pals since Day 1. She’s not new to skincare either. She has a blogging background as a former writer for a Pittsburgh medical spa (theskincentermd.com). Deb will be informing you about all things SKIN. Look for her new Rutz blogs soon!
    • How to Videos! Not sure how to apply some of your products? Want to see beauty tips in action? Want to view how sun damage really happens? Look for Rutz videos in coming months!
    • There are exciting new products under development, like an antioxidant tea scrub, a lip exfoliator, a body serum that leaves you all aglow, holiday gift bundles—and more.
    • Want to be a Rutz product tester? We could use your feedback on the new products we’d like to ad to the Rutz line-up. Just message us when you place your next order and we’ll throw in a couple of new goodies to try!
    • We’re on TV—AGAIN at EvineLive, a home shopping network.

FOR A GREAT DEAL, WATCH EVINE LIVE—Friday, September 2nd at 7 pm (EST)

Yep, yours truly will be conducting a product demonstration on EVINE’s home shopping show.

Two of Rutz’ best sellers, Glow Ahead an anti-wrinkle serum containing 1% Retinol, and Freeze Frame, an intensive night-time skin resurfacer containing 10% Glycolic Acid, will be showcased in my live presentation. These mindfully made products contain natural, botanical—yet effective—ingredients and are paraben-free and cruelty-free.

The show can be streamed via mobile device here: http://bit.ly/RutzEvineLive

That’s all for now! Stay cool!

    Best! XOXO

  • Welcome to our new website!

    Change is good, right?

Every blue moon, I like to get a mini makeover. You know, to change things up a bit. Truth be known, I’m a bit of a minimalist, so even a fresh lop of the locks or a killer pair of new strappy sandals (complete with pedicure, of course) has a way of perking me right up.

Well, our original website RutzSkincare.com needed a lift, too. But not just to pretty it up. We needed a pretty big overhaul. And for good reason…

    We’ve grown!

What began in 2013 with just three skincare products, has grown into a complete nature-based skincare line for women. And we remembered our male counterparts—especially those who’ve been purchasing our skincare line for their ladies. We listened to their needs and created a men’s skincare trio for our lovely gents.

And just as the Rutz skincare line was conceived based on a need (my own desire for both natural ingredients AND effective results) I had another need. I wanted an everyday household cleaner I could use on my counters and then make grab n’ go sandwiches for my kids—without a plate. Yep, sometimes, life is just that rushed!

Ever think about all the food and body parts that touch those kitchen and bath surfaces? Well, I sure did. (And I sure as heck don’t want bleach or petroleum-based residue anywhere near my kids’ bottoms OR their sandwiches!) So I created a simple and effective, 100% natural, multi-surface cleaner and started experimenting with essential oils for scents. Long story short, Herbaceous Scentz Multi-Tasking Surface Cleaner was born—with several (consumer-tested) herbal scents designed to bring aromatherapy to your living spaces! I swear, you’ll be looking for things to clean—like the microwave and floors—just because! Our cleaner is just the first to come in our new Home Collection.

With the addition of our Home Collection, we’ve broadened our scope of plant-based products. Our team of awesome designers and developers have worked hard to make it easy for you to learn, shop and enjoy more and more Mama Nature-based products for your skin, your home and your life!

So, welcome to the new Rutznaturals.com!

We have more ideas under development. But really, this site is about YOU—and what you want. So drop us a line! Tell us what needle you’ve been looking for in the mainstream haystack of household products. I look forward to hearing from you!

Wishing you goodness in life, always!
